Excessive growth of scar tissue from the healed skin injury is keloid. It often extends beyond the area of the injury.

Causes

It may be due to injuries like acne, burns, chickenpox, ear piercing, minor scratches, surgical cuts, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, etc. It may develop in some people who are genetically prone to get it.

Symptoms

There may be discoloration of red or pink. Usually a keloid is located at the site of injury. It would be lumpy or nodular or ridged. Sometimes itching may be felt during the formation and growth of keloid.

Prognosis and complications

Normally keloid is not a dangerous one. The look and appearance may be affected, which can make one to feel psychologically. The area of keloid may be darker than the skin around, when it is more exposed to sun.
