Template:Stub Earache, otalgia or otodynia is a sharp, dull, or burning pain, which may be temporary or constant. It can be primary otalgia, which originates from inside the ear or referred otalgia, which originates from outside the ear.

Causes

Primary otalgia is mainly due to infection. Other general causes include arthritis of the jaw, ear injury from pressure changes especially from high altitudes, object stuck in the ear or severely impacted ear wax, ruptured or perforated eardrum, sinus infection, sore throat with referred pain to the ears, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), tooth infection, ear canal irritation from cotton-tipped swabs, soap or shampoo staying in the ear and water from bathing.
